Horse keeping
Despite the higher management requirements more and more horses are kept in groups. To achieve optimal and appropriate feeding conditions automated feeding systems have been developed. These systems provide for repeated feedings throughout the day. The animals’ individual needs are therefore satisfied. The risk of excessive feeding and suppression of low rank animals during the feed intake is also minimized.
Dairy farming
The paper presents a study where different measuring systems for oestrus detection have been tested on the same animal. The trial included a prototype of an advanced pedometer for the measurement of three parameters.
Dairy farming
The article is about a new pedometer that is able to measure three parameters: activity, laying period, outside temperature (ALT-Pedometer). The pedometer is fixed at the ankles of the dairy cows.
Electronic ear tags
Electronic labeling is necessary for automatic, individual tracking of pigs. The loss rates and performance of one plastic and three electronic ear tags were analysed on 16 commercial farms with a total of 9,325 experimental animals in two different housing and production systems in each case. The functional reliability of the electronic ear tags was very good. The ear tag loss rate ranged from 1.5 to 4.1 % in the four different housing and production systems. There were no significant differences between ear-tag types and housing and production systems in terms of either functional reliability or loss rates.

Lameness can be classified by visual assessments, but this method requires time and great experience especially in large herds. An electronic device for early recognition of lameness is desirable, not only for veterinary reasons, but also for the farmer. ALT-pedometers (ALT = activity, laying behaviour, (outside) temperature; pedometer = step counter) are a proved recording system for determining movement activity, which are used most of all for oestrus detection. The question, how far ALT-pedometers can help to detect lameness is content of this article. It is based on methodical preinvestigations for a doctorate concerning this issue.
fattening pigs
The article is about the costs and labour input for the required documentation in the production of fattening pigs. It presents an exemplary farm for analyzing these questions.
Data management
The fattening and carcass performance test for pigs in Bavaria has been organised as a model of integrated pig production. The data of 3500 pigs of the LPA Schwarzenau and of 6000 pigs of the LPA Grub are gathered and evaluated in the information system LuZ with the help of a definite ISO-transponder number, which the piglet gets at the 24th day of life at the piglet raising station Baumannshof. At the age of 56 days the pigs are brought to the test station Grub. All the identifications for animal weights or food-allocations by electronic weighing-machines, for the carcasses, the carcass-grading, pH-values and printing of a carcass labels are performed by the transponder in the ear-tag. Within the DV-network at Grub there is the possibility for the different “leading PCs” or off-line-devices to communicate to join the different data sets for each animal by its transponder number. The implementation of a Dynamic Link Library makes it possible to integrate external software products and independent data-storage in the DV-network of Grub.
Internet
With the ARPAnet in 1965 the development of the today's Internets started. Today for many sections of the population the Internet is an often used medium. Within the agricultural production area it is unfortunately still very reservedly used. Also here many application types are conceivable. In this paper I would like to present my beginning project of realizing a web based system that enables individual cost calculations for agricultural enterprises as well as horizontal comparisons. According to a cost accounting model a network plan has to be created which enables operational cost accounting. The necessary data are inferred thereby from a central data base. At the end this system should be completed with further analysis components of operational cost accounting.
Electronic identification
Electronic identification systems are a breaking technology for electronic article surveillance, electronic cash, process automation, logistics, animal identification and other applications. Methods of RFID1-Systems, working principle and criteria for classification, usage in agriculture and industrial applications as well as future developments are pointed out.
netRind
„netRind“ is a new internet information system potentially used by about 25.000 dairy cattle farmers. It has direct access to the centrally stored data from milk recording, herd book keeping and artificial insemination of the VIT computer centre. It supports a dairy cattle farmer in his herd management and supplies an advisor with valuable information for his service. The up to date information can be retrieved simply by an internet browser.
