  • About:

Since the mid 1990s, various internetbased information systems for intercompany exchange of product and processing- related data between farmers and the up and downstream value addition stages have been developed. Although most IT solutions have in the meantime become relatively effective, farmers continue to favour the more traditional channels of communication (post, fax etc.). This article addresses the lack of acceptance of internet-based, inter-organisational information systems on the basis of the results of a survey of 873 pig farmers. The statistical analysis is based on an exploratory model, in which not only determinants from acceptance research, but also constructs specifically tailored to inter-organisational information systems are investigated. The results were validated using a binarylogistic regression analysis. The findings of this investigation show that the use of internet-based information systems is significantly influenced by the intensity of vertical coordination of the business relationship between farmers and slaughterhouses.

  • About:

For several years the meat industry meets new challenges with the implementation of certification systems. The authors of this paper think that an efficient communication along the supply chain is crucial for its success. The paper analyzes the requirements of these certification systems concerning information exchange between the steps. The results highlight the necessity of innovative IT solutions and demonstrate future requirements of their design.

  • About:

There is considerable variation regarding format and definition of process and base data for decision making on farm, administrative, processor, trader and retailer levels. This causes difficulties concerning the interaction of different software solutions within theses firms. A way out of this set of difficulties is offered by the standardized data exchange language agroXML. The concept of agroXML is based on the worldwide standard XML (eXtensible Markup Language). In the agroXML scheme the specific agricultural terms are stored and are explained in the agroXML dictionary.
The aim of this paper is to describe the background situation and to demonstrate the need of standardized data formats such as agroXML. In this context the information requirement of agricultural enterprises (inside the farm operation and between businesses) are described as well as the requirements of farm management and those deriving from quality assurance and traceability endeavors; account is also taken to data and information demands from public authorities to the agricultural industry. Additionally, the concept, the objectives, and particularly the various benefits of agroXML at different levels are explained. Finally, the state of the art in developing this standard and perspectives are described. Also the question of internationalization of the data standard will be raised.

  • About:

For the last few years the Internet and its use are expanding with tremendous growth rates. In this context the net is also used for commercial purposes (e.g. product information and presentation, marketing, ordering, billing and payments). By now, the agricultural sector also presents itself online in a comprehensive way. With respect to this background, the objective of an empirical analysis conducted by the Department of Applied Agricultural Informatics and Management, University of Hohenheim was to acquire basic information about the potential for e-business in the agricultural sector. For this purpose 1.189 questionnaires were sent to selected farmers in Baden-Wuerttemberg in May 2000. The questionnaires and letters of introduction were sent personally and return-envelopes free of charge were enclosed. From May 30 to July 19 an overall amount of 483 letters or 40,6% were returned which can be considered as a very good response.
